What is Halal? And Why Is It Important?

by Drink Point Zero on Jan 03, 2023
What is Halal? And Why Is It Important? - Halal Wine Cellar

Halal is an Islamic standard for what is permissible to eat and drink. The idea has guided Muslim households for centuries, and it's now far more visible in the West as more people read labels closely and ask what's really in what they're buying. So what does halal actually mean, why does it matter, and how do you know whether something on the shelf qualifies?

What "halal" actually means

Halal simply means "permissible" under Islamic law. It's the counterpart to haram, meaning "forbidden." The word covers far more than food β€” it touches how people pray, earn, and live β€” but in everyday shopping it usually comes up around what's allowed on the table. For observant Muslims, sticking to halal is part of practicing their faith, and the standard extends all the way back through how a product is made.

What makes food and drink halal

For food and drink specifically, two criteria do most of the work:

  • No forbidden ingredients. Pork and its by-products are out. So is alcohol β€” which is why it's the deciding factor for anything wine-adjacent.
  • Proper sourcing and handling. Meat must come from an animal slaughtered according to Islamic guidelines, and the whole production process has to stay free of cross-contamination with anything forbidden.

Certification exists to take the guesswork out of it. An independent body inspects the ingredients and the process, then issues a certificate β€” so a shopper doesn't have to reverse-engineer a label to trust it.

Where wine comes in: the 0.0% question

Wine is the interesting case, because alcohol is the one ingredient that decides it. This is where "non-alcoholic" gets slippery. In the U.S., a wine can be labeled "non-alcoholic" and still contain up to 0.5% alcohol by volume β€” a real amount, not zero. For someone avoiding alcohol on principle, 0.5% still means explaining the bottle, and it still isn't permissible.

That's the line we hold at Drink Point Zero: true 0.0% β€” not 0.5%. If a wine isn't 0.0%, we don't carry it. That single standard is what makes a bottle safe to pour for the person who genuinely can't have a trace β€” whether the reason is faith, pregnancy, recovery, medication, driving, or simply choosing not to tonight. Faith is one reason among many, served with the same care as every other.

Several of our producers back that up with independent halal certification and annual third-party audits β€” the So Jennie sparkling range and the never-fermented Le Petit Γ‰toilΓ© wines among them (documentation available on request). Others we select on the 0.0% standard and taste alone. You can read exactly how we verify every bottle on The Zero Standard.

Why it matters beyond the label

A halal standard isn't only about a single ingredient. It's about being able to say yes at the table without a caveat β€” to shop, host, and travel knowing what's in your glass is genuinely fine for you. That certainty is the whole point, and it's exactly what a verified 0.0% cellar is built to deliver.

Pouring with confidence

If you're looking for a real glass that clears the bar, start with our guide to the best 0.0% wines to start with, or see how to pair non-alcoholic wine with a meal. For a celebration, the sparkling collection β€” led by the halal-certified So Jennie range β€” is where most people begin.
